There are few parts of our lives
COVID-19 hasn’t touched: businesses are trying to adapt to new realities,
families are juggling family and work demands, couples have had to postpone weddings, most events and fundraisers have been cancelled, non-profits are
trying to invent new revenue streams, and social connection continues to be restricted. But, as summer approaches, marking the end of the school year, there’s one particular group we should all have in our thoughts: the Class of 2020.
Not only has COVID-19 deprived the Class of 2020 of the last few months of their high school years, a time when many make memories that last a
lifetime, prom celebrations have been cancelled or postponed until an unknown date.
While not life threatening, this is a sad loss that everyone should sympathize with. Who doesn’t look forward to their high school graduation years in advance?
These graduates won’t be able to get dressed up in fancy dresses and tuxedos and attend an event to celebrate their accomplishments and everything they have worked so hard for – at least as per usual. They won’t get that one final hoorah with their friends to mark the end of their high school years and essentially childhood before they start the next chapter of their lives. College, university and other graduates are affected as well – they too are missing out on the important ritual marking the end of one significant life stage and the beginning of another.
There have been unique celebrations popping up across the country: drive-thru grads, social distancing backyard proms, virtual graduations, and more. It would be nice to see some of these concepts replicated locally and it appears ideas are blossoming at our local high schools (see page 22) – now there’s a new way to put the Pontiac in the spotlight! It’s time to turn these lemons into lemonade!
Check out what the Commission scolaire des Hauts-Bois-de-l'Outaouais (CSHBO) has done for their graduates on page 12!
In the end, it comes down to our community doing what it can to congratulate our local youth and make sure their accomplishments get the recognition they deserve, in a time when the COVID pandemic captures most of the attention. What about extending the rainbow-in-the-window trend to commemorate our grads?
It’s as easy as simply letting our local graduates know we recognize their accomplishments, we’re proud, we’re thinking about them, and wish them the best of luck in their new adventures. It can be a social media message, a card in the mail, a quick word when you’re out and about in the community, attending any community celebrations like Pontiac High School’s graduation parade… the method doesn’t really matter, it’s the thought that counts!
