The federal election results are in: with eight candidates in the Pontiac riding, Liberal William Amos, the incumbent, won 49% of the vote. But our duty doesn’t end when we cast our votes! We need to ensure our MP does everything in his power to conserve the Pontiac’s best interests: the quality of the
environment/atmosphere, the agricultural industry and natural resources/spaces.
These topics and many more are typically thought of under the umbrella of climate change; the most pressing, urgent, and frankly, threatening issue facing humankind today. Sea levels are rising; our seasons are warming at an alarming (and unsustainable) rate; species are going extinct and unbalancing ecosystems; there’s more C02 in the air than ever before; we’re losing our rainforests…the list goes on.
Greta Thunberg recently gave a speech to the UN in which she said “I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if our house is on fire, because it is.” According to the International Panel on Climate Change, we are less than 12 years away from being unable to undo our mistakes, and if this doesn’t indicate a house-on-fire scenario, I don’t know what does.
Most of the time, it’s easy to feel helpless in the face of this overwhelming issue, but in local politics, it can be different: that’s where we can put our voices together toward real, loud and positive change.
On September 27, marches were held in cities across Canada to signal the need for climate justice, including one in Montreal with over 500,000 participants – about 30% of the region’s population! Local Pontiac schools also organized their own marches. People across the world are increasingly realizing the importance of this issue.
It’s crucial that we do our part here in the Pontiac, because we too have a lot to lose – the natural beauty of our landscape and one of our main industries, agriculture, is completely dependant on the stability of the environment. We need to act fast if we don’t want the beauty of our land, survival of our industries, and the safety of our residents to be compromised by floods, droughts, irregular seasons or other climate disturbances.
With limited time to act, we have to unite our voices and speak up NOW! The Liberal Party has made big promises regarding the environment, namely having net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. But we’ve heard promises like this from them before, and instead we got pipelines.
We have a representative that is a member of Canada’s leading Party. Write him letters, call to ask questions and attend events in the name of climate justice to let him know where our priorities lie! Will Amos needs to represent the Pontiac by working towards the promises his party made. It’s time for the Liberals and our local MP to put their words into action!
