The holiday season is upon us, bringing with it lots of shopping, entertaining, and dining, during what many in the retail sector consider their busiest time of year. For small local businesses, it's something they often look forward to, when increased consumer spending makes up for slow times and possibly helps their year end profitably.
The holidays are also a time when the gospel “shop local” statement becomes even more prevalent, encouraging consumers to support their small local businesses rather than purchasing gifts and supplies online or outside of the area, especially at big box stores.
There's no denying that finding everything you are looking for locally can sometimes be difficult, but to make a difference, you don't have to adopt an all-or-nothing approach – even the smallest gestures count.
A recent survey done by Leger for the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) shows the average Canadian consumer plans to spend about $675 this holiday season between gifts, food, decorations, travel, entertainment, and more. In households with more than one adult, the amount obviously increases.
The MRC Pontiac has about 6,200 households, according to the 2016 census. If each of them were to spend an average of $800 (well below the national average for a two-adult household) for all of their holiday necessities, it translates to a grand total of $4,960,000. If just 40% of this was spent locally, nearly $2 million would be injected into the MRC Pontiac's economy – money that will eventually benefit us all time and time again.
It's a target that's fairly easy to accomplish. Out of ten gifts, it only involves buying four locally - that's it! For other purchases, it's as easy as choosing to fuel up at local gas stations, grabbing supplies at local grocery stores, visiting local holiday markets, fairs and pop-up shows, buying gift cards from local stores, etc.; not all of the time, but just some of the time.
But 40% is only a minimum, dear readers, I urge you to raise the bar. This holiday
season, I dare you to set local purchase goals, achieve them, and then aim to exceed them next year. Challenge yourself to do the same during other special times of the year, or better yet, all year round – make it a New Year's resolution!
Instead of heading to the mall, big box stores or online, shop from the small
business owners who have reason to put effort into creating a satisfied customer. There's no better way to avoid postal strike, traffic and over-crowded store woes than by slipping some local talent, products and services under the tree. There's no place like home for the holidays and there's no greater gift to yourself and your community than keeping your cash flowing at home.
