Despite Christmas’ dramatic break from reality, many of us return back to the daily world feeling our holiday was too short; we didn’t get the rest, relaxation and recuperation from our busy lives, as we had hoped. Why is that?
Yes, we all blame the hustle and bustle of Christmas, but ask the following questions: where was my cell phone, if not at my side? Did I check my emails several times while “on holidays”? Did I answer text messages or post a status update on Facebook?
If answering yes to any of these, we already have the answer.
According to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, over 75% of households in Canada have access to a wireless phone, with over 27 million cell phone subscribers across the country. A Google study found that about 80% of smartphone owners say they don’t leave home without their phones, and two-thirds claim they had used their phone every day of the past week. Cell phones have become physical extensions of our body, like    another limb.
Unplugging from the technological world is one way to experience the reality of a holiday and make the time we spend away from the real world more meaningful. It will help us unwind to face the demands of reality when we return to our normal schedules. Why do we feel the need to be accessible 24/7? Without technology, we may find time slows down as a result of being more attuned to our surroundings.
We have become controlled by technology. We feel it’s urgent to respond to       messages and calls, or to check emails. The demands technology places on us can be exhausting and overwhelming. Have we forgotten that emails and messages will still be there tomorrow or next week? Have we been programmed to feel this urgency and to feel guilty if messages are not dealt with immediately? Yes.
Technology’s purpose is to save time, but sometimes we are wasting time by using our devices. They are tools, not task-masters. We waste valuable time that could be better spent catching up with distant relatives or friends, creating Christmas gifts with our children, or enjoying the festivities of the season. Technology can create a barrier to thoughtfulness and meaningful interactions. Life does not have a pause and remind    button – what happens is over and done with.
Isn’t Christmas the time to embrace our surroundings, enjoy the outdoors, take a long walk with the dog, go sliding with the kids, or spend time reminiscing with family and friends and deepening meaningful  relationships with those who are with us?
In our world, face-to-face conversations are going extinct. When we give time to others by listening and devoting attention, we not only improve the quality of our relationships, but we are spending our time wisely.
