Denise Giroux, a lawyer by profession, said she became involved in politics to ensure real and progressive politics are implemented in Canada.
“My first priority is to achieve a progressive agenda on all fronts. Taxing Google, Amazon, and Facebook (who currently benefit from special tax exemptions), stopping the Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) project in Chalk River, and putting the environment first; if we want all this to happen, it takes a will and the NDP has it,” she said.
The NDP’s platform promises several investments in social programs like protecting and strengthening pensions, creating a national school nutrition program, expanding coverage under the national healthcare system, ending homelessness within a decade, improving home and long-term care, strengthening and expanding public healthcare, among others.
“[In order to invest further in these areas] you have to be willing to undertake a tax reform to look for things that are not warranted or justified, like tax exemptions [that would provide additional revenue streams],” explained Giroux, adding that “The
current government allows oil companies and large corporations to benefit from tax credits. A tax reform will allow Canada to better distribute wealth and reinvest in green energy.” She noted that economic development in the Pontiac will come from
creating jobs in the green energy sector.
“In the environment field, our party has essentially the same ideas as the Green Party, but it’s in the area of economic development that we stand out. By putting an end to the tax havens that benefit large companies, we will be able to develop local jobs that also respect the environment,” she added.
Giroux accused the current MP of not taking leadership on certain local issues,
such as Canadian Nuclear Laboratories’ NSDF project in Chalk River. “This project needs to be stopped as soon as possible, and as a lawyer, I know very well that the
government can use current regulations to halt this,”
added Giroux, who believes the biggest problem with the project is the excessive risk it poses to the river and drinking water. “I don't have confidence in the process currently in place and I think we can stop it, by quickly bringing forward clear evidence of the risks involved,” she told the Journal.
To develop the Pontiac riding, Giroux believes the first step is to quickly improve internet and cellular coverage. “The government’s current action plan’s timeline is too long. Cellular and internet infrastructure are essential
for attracting residents and industries to settle here, as well as creating jobs. We cannot wait, we must act immediately with wise investments,” she said.
To attract and retain youth, Giroux believes it takes two ingredients: jobs and affordable housing. “Quality, affordable housing will have a significant impact on the retention of young people, but also of older generations. It’s important to allow seniors to remain in our rural areas [and to continue to support our economy],” explained Giroux.
The NDP has always supported electoral reform in order to promote proportional representation.
