Louis Lang is a retired postal worker who was very active in the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, holding positions in the executive committee of the Ottawa Local, including president. His platform mainly focuses on giving decision-making power to the people.
Lang believes the Pontiac’s biggest strength is its people, those available to exploit the region’s natural resources like agriculture, forestry and mining. “To develop these resources, it’s important to organize things differently. Handing over control of resources to large enterprises that exploit for profit, take those profits out of the region and close industries when they’re no longer profitable has
created devastation in the past. Agricultural co-operatives and other forms
of local decision-making must be established so problems can be discussed and solutions found that favour the people and not monopoly corporations,” he explained.
The Pontiac’s biggest limitation is that the people have no decision making power and the big political parties favour large corporations, according to Lang. “As long as the motive force is profit, the interests of the community and the people aren’t really considered,” he said, giving the example of Chalk River’s proposed Near Surface Disposal Facility, which he said is unacceptable because it is based on the interests of a private consortium instead of science and safe disposal.
“The privatization of the production and distribution of nuclear energy is the main source of the problem. Control over electricity, nuclear energy and all other resources must be brought under public control and no one can be allowed to profit from them,” he added.
Economic development also depends on improved internet and cell phone coverage, as does education, said Lang. He said this system must also be brought under public control rather than giving public funds to large monopolies that will make decisions about providing service based on what profits them most. “High-speed needs to be regulated in the same way as Canada Post, a Crown Corporation required to provide universal postal service to all Canadians at the same price no matter where they live,” Lang told the Journal.
The Marxist-Leninist Party believes in electoral reform to restore representative democracy. “All the power is in the executive level - the PMO [Prime Minister’s Office] and the cabinet – so people don’t have a say in decisions that affect their lives. Elections are dominated by the major parties. Our approach is to create new political arrangements so working people can create their own political organizations, work out their own stands and speak in their own name,” Lang explained.
A “socially responsible overhaul” of the employment insurance regime is needed, he said, noting increased access to the plan and its amount and duration should be seriously considered.
Lang believes safeguarding the natural environment must be considered by looking at who controls the economy and the decision-making processes. “What protects the environment is the resistance of the people to pay-the-rich schemes and the theft of land and resources. The indigenous peoples’ involvement to uphold their hereditary rights is as fundamental as the initiatives of youth to demand immediate action and not empty words about balancing economic growth and protecting the environment,” he concluded.
