A record 35 – $,1000 bursaries

Lynne Lavery

For over 30 years the Pontiac Scholarship Fund has awarded bursaries to help local students complete their studies; records show that, to date, over $450,000 has been given to deserving students. 2022 has the most generous donors list in the history of the organization: $35,000 will be awarded to deserving students, this year!

The bursary committee is composed of 6 individuals from Pontiac’s business and education sectors; they contact businesses, the general public and government agencies for donations. Application forms are now available on-line; students simply go to the website, www.pontiacscholarshipfund.ca, download and save the fillable PDF application and then email it to the committee. Or they can contact Jaime Christie-Stewart at 819-819-921-3508 for more information.

After the deadline of May 27, 2022, applications are reviewed and recipients are chosen based on their field of study (examples: health care, agriculture, business, communications, trades etc.), their level of education, and their financial needs. Community involvement is part of one bursary’s criteria and all applicants are asked how the money will help them return and contribute to Pontiac’s future.

Historically, bursaries have been presented at an awards ceremony and it is hoped that an in-person presentation will be possible this year. Short bios of the recipients are also posted to the Pontiac Scholarship Fund’s Facebook page.

The generosity of this year’s donors shows how local businesses and organizations believe in the youth of the Pontiac and recognize the need to support them. “The Pontiac needs educated youth who will return, after their studies, and contribute to the future of our communities. Education is the key. Our donors understand this and are very generous in their giving. We thank them immensely for their support of this
very worthwhile project,” concluded committee president, Robert Pelletier.
