New Democrats are calling on Liberal and Conservative MPs to take a
principled stand and vote in favour of the Private Member’s Bill put forward by Romeo Saganash (Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou), NDP deputy critic for Intergovernmental Aboriginal Affairs.
“Bill C-641 is an Act to ensure the laws of Canada are in harmony with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples,” said Saganash. “The bill would finally enshrine the principles set out in the UN’s Declaration, endorsed by Canada in 2010, in the laws of our country.”
National Chief Perry Bellegarde of the Assembly of First Nations has sent a
letter to all MPs stressing the importance of their support for Bill C-641. He stated the adoption of C-641 will provide a
crucial opportunity for the federal
government to engage in genuine
partnership with Indigenous peoples.
