FORT-COULONGE & MANSFIELD – A group of six citizens calling themselves the Comité des Citoyens Ouvert à la Fusion (CCOF) have recently circulated a
petition for residents in favour of amalgamating the two municipalities, with the goal of obtaining 1,000 signatures.
According to Fernande Lacroix, one of the spokespeople for the group, the petition has been placed in about 20 local businesses in the two municipalities, including most restaurants, the Metro, both hardware stores, and Amyotte’s gas station, as well as online at www.ipetitions.com. Over 150 people have already signed the online petition.
“During the last municipal election, residents responded favourably for amalgamating [the two municipalities]. We citizens ask that both municipalities start the process. Let us unite! Union does not only count for strength, but also for
happiness (translation from a citation by Alphonse Desjardins),” says the petition, which will be collected the first week of October.
At this time, the group has not decided on their next course of action once the petition has been collected. More details will be available in the next edition of the Journal, October 5.
