SHAWVILLE – Construction began on a new 12,000 square foot shopping centre along Highway 148 at the entrance to Shawville, across from Campbell’s Polaris, May 9. Site owner Jean-Marc Richard, a pharmacist by trade, was joined by his son, Marc Richard, a real estate agent, and pharmacist Marc Aufranc at the ground breaking ceremony.
“This is a $1.8 million project,” said Marc Richard, adding that the building should be complete by this coming October. “The first big tenant we have right now is Familiprix Pharmacy. We have others, but it will be a couple weeks before we can announce who they are,” he added.
Aufranc, who formerly worked at Shawville’s R. Filion & F. Laflamme pharmacy before it was closed last year, will be running the Familiprix pharmacy, which he hopes to open by November 3.
Both Jean-Marc and Marc Richard see the project growing much larger. “We are hoping to see this project expand to 50,000 square feet in the future,” they said.
Can Shawville support another pharmacy?
Although Ahmad Hassan, owner of Shawville’s Uniprix
pharmacy, said the new pharmacy could affect his business, he is not
worried. “Obviously it may affect us, but we are running and we are going to do our best to continue serving the community like we always have. It’s always the peoples’ choice where they go, but we work hard every day and will continue to do so,” he said. Hassan also worked at R. Filion & F. Laflamme before he opened his own pharmacy and then later purchased and closed the former business.
