WALTHAM – The Black River, named for the color of its water, often floods in late spring depending on temperatures and snowpack. Presently the Black River is suffering from “frazil” ice conditions which have reduced the free flow of water, causing tremendous flooding in the Lac Vert area. The Black River Road was closed in late February because of the possibility of a large flood.
It has since reopened as far as the Black River Inn and Black River Outfitters, with the municipality of Waltham monitoring the road and making necessary repairs.
The bridge at kilometre 18 seems safe for the moment. The water level has gone down about four feet compared to when the water was touching the bridge last week (photo), but the situation may change again with the milder temperatures predicted this week.
