SHAWVILLE – Four young women took the microphone at the Agricultural Hall on August 8 to vie for the 2013 Shawville Fair Ambassador. Holly Campbell, Vanessa Lafleur, Alanna Desabrais and Karissa Rutledge talked about an aspect of the fair: from poultry, the demolition derby, the horse pull and the beef division, while weaving in the theme of  ‘Celebrating 100 years of 4-H in Canada’. They also shared a favourite memory of the fair. Desabrais: winning Grand Champion Rabbit; Rutledge: the 2012 demolition derby; Lafleur: pony rides as a kid; and Campbell: helping with her grandfather’s heavy horse trophy and volunteering.
The competition began in July when they all met with the fair’s directors. “The directors and contestants don’t usually meet so this was a chance to chat about speeches,” explained Hayley Campbell, who was on the committee of the Ambassador program. She and Pontiac Agricultural Society President, Sara Knox, mc’d the finals where Vanessa Lafleur was chosen runner up to Holly Campbell.
