We have survived our first year following the decade of anti-democratic rule, and while the new federal ‘tone’ is a vast improvement, it remains to be seen if their substance will be significantly improved beyond the preceding administration’s record.
Of particular concern are the recently downplayed election promises, and
the “window-dressing” (aka ‘sham’) public consultations on Proportional Representation (PR).
If the acknowledged maladie of ‘electile dysfunction’ is to be effectively treated and cured (in the wake of Dr. Monsef’s “Mydemocracy.ca” slap-in-the-face to those citizens who intelligently advocated and the Parliamentary committee’s recommendations for future Proportional Representation), then Canadians of all political leanings need to demand much stronger medicine than the recent spin around “rank” ballots posing as PR, and smiley “selfies” from the new crowd in the PMO.
And there will be ever more need for democratic diligence and actions on our CDF parts to hold our governments at all four levels more accountable and shame them to become more transparent – otherwise, their continuing intransigence and obfuscation will “trump” any hopes and expectations for better tomorrows for our grandkids, our kids, our communities and our Earth and all other
living things.
Happy New Year to all… and to all a more proportionally democratic 2017!
