It appears Robin Hamblin Fuller questions the need for strict policies to
control the spread of Covid-19, citing that 7,000 deaths had occurred worldwide when the letter was printed March 25.
At the end of March, the death toll had reached about 20,000 and tens of
thousands are in critical care. The virus threatens to exceed the capacity of hospitals to give proper care to patients who need it, and threatens world-wide economic prosperity.
Covid-19 is much more lethal and contagious than the common flu and there’s currently no vaccine. Fuller cites statistics on heart disease: it’s not
contagious and neither is malaria. We have treatment available for heart disease, diabetes, typhoid, etc.
Countries like China, Singapore and Korea have implemented strict social
distancing measures to control the spread of the illness. The choice we faced was to continue with our lives as if Covid-19 didn’t exist and threaten the lives of
millions of people or to take short-term measures to stop it cold. Strict policies were the right choice.
