For the past 30 years the Pontiac Scholarship Fund has awarded bursaries to help local students complete their studies; records show that, to date, over $425,000 has been given to deserving students. 2021 will be no exception, with a record 28 – $1,000 bursaries available, donated by local individuals and businesses.
The bursary committee is composed of 6 individuals from Pontiac’s business and education sectors; they approach businesses, the general public and government agencies for donations. Application forms will be available on May 7. New this year is an online fillable PDF; students simply go to the website, www.pontiacscholarshipfund.ca, fill out the application and email it directly to the committee.
If a paper copy is needed, students can contact Jaime Christie-Stewart at 819-921-3508
After the deadline of June 4, 2021, applications are reviewed and recipients are chosen based on their field of study (examples: studies in health care, agriculture, business, art, etc.), their level of education, and their financial needs. Community involvement is part of one bursary’s criteria and all applicants are asked how the money will help them return and contribute to Pontiac’s future.
Historically, bursaries have been presented at an awards ceremony. However, due to Covid-19, in 2020 a virtual presentation was necessary; short bios of the recipients were posted to the Pontiac Scholarship Fund’s Facebook page. At press time, it is uncertain if an in-person ceremony will be possible this year. All recipients will be given more details by mid-June.
“The Pontiac needs educated youth who will return, after their studies, and contribute to the future of our communities. Education is the key. Our donors understand this and are very generous in their giving. We thank them immensely for their support of this very worthwhile project,” concluded committee secretary, France Morissette-Lamarche.
