SHAWVILLE – Twenty-six Pontiac students each received a $1,000 bursary from the Pontiac Scholarship Fund, during an awards ceremony, June 28, at McDowell Elementary School.   Among the 75 people present were many of the 55 business-owners and individuals who contribute to the annual scholarships:  MNA André Fortin, MRC Warden Raymond Durocher, MRC Director-General Bernard Roy, Pontiac Agricultural Society president Sara Knox, Caisse populaire Fort-Coulonge board member Rosemarie Bertrand, farm producer Andrew Simms, Dr. Maurice Lamarche, plus the Scholarship Fund’s president Robert Pelletier and his wife Suzette.
In its 27 years, the Scholarship Fund has awarded over 375 bursaries to Pontiac youth, primarily based on financial need.  Some scholarships have
specific criteria:  university programs, health care or business programs, agriculture, trades, or good citizenship and community service.  All of Pontiac is represented by these youth, from Secondary V graduates to those finishing post-graduate work; all hope to return to the Pontiac to work here and improve the local economy.
“It’s a testament to the strength of Pontiac’s community that such a small, and economically-challenged area can raise $26,000 to help our youth succeed.  Their success is our success!” commented Mr. Pelletier.
