L’ISLE-AUX-ALLUMETTES/SHAWVILLE – National Ice Cream Day took on a special meaning across the Pontiac as local businesses and residents came together July 18 and 19 to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

The fundraiser was held Saturday at the Marché de Chapeau in L’Isle-aux-Allumettes
and Sunday at Brooklyn Place in Shawville, with several participating businesses donating a portion of their ice cream sales to CHEO.

The event was held in memory of Kendyl Smith-Trimm (2014–2023), who died in August 2023 after a courageous battle with osteosarcoma. Following her passing, Kendyl’s parents established the Kendyl Smith-Trimm Caring for Kids Endowment Fund, which supports CHEO’s work caring for children and their families.

Throughout the weekend, Kendyl’s family and friends visited participating businesses to thank supporters and encourage additional donations. Prize draws and 50/50 raffles were held at several locations, while the CHEO Bear made appearances to greet
children and families.

The annual fundraiser has become a way for the community to honour Kendyl’s memory while giving back to the hospital that played an important role in her care. Organizers said
the continued support from local businesses, volunteers and residents helps ensure the event remains a meaningful tribute and a successful fundraiser for CHEO.
