Our federal politicians constantly remind us that if we have any concerns about the near-surface nuclear waste dump proposed for the edge of the Ottawa River, at Chalk River, we should contact the CNSC, the supposed impartial department looking out for our safety in these matters. Now I read in this paper that their media relations advisor, Kim Cunningham, is saying that we have nothing to fear and that it’s only a few low-level items, like clothing, rags, and tools. It sounds to me like the spokesperson for the CNSC is selling us something that hasn’t yet been approved. The CNSC, a captive organisation, has never refused a licence to the nuclear industry. In this case, it appears–once again–to be leading the parade. That is not comforting.
