Seeing the dedication of some students, siblings, parents and grandparents at the fundraiser recently held for St. Mary’s elementary school in Quyon was very heart warming. Teaching your children the importance of being a volunteer is one of the best life lessons you can give them. While some parents were not taught this themselves, it is not too late to learn from others and still teach your children this valuable lesson.
When the children who were participating in the fundraiser were told the proceeds would go towards improving their gymnasium and replacing their play structure, they were so happy. The smiles on their faces when they came back to the school after collecting bottles, cans and change were priceless. They were babbling about how nice some people were and you could tell what a rewarding experience it was for them.
There are far too many people who take the attitude of “oh well, someone else will do it.” These people know that in this society, even though they do not contribute towards fundraisers, they and their children still benefit. This isn’t fair, but we are not allowed to discriminate and have to be fair to everyone. However, always expecting someone else to do it, isn’t fair either.
Volunteers are needed more and more now with all the government cutbacks. If everyone pitched in to help and did not always leave it to the same people, what a great community we would be living in!
