The Importance of Voting

Approximately 57% of voters chose not to exercise their rights as Canadian citizens in the 2009 Municipality of Pontiac election. We live in a country with democracy and freedom of choice, that includes the choice whether to vote or not.

Approximately 57% of voters chose not to exercise their rights as Canadian citizens in the 2009 Municipality of Pontiac election. We live in a country with democracy and freedom of choice, that includes the choice whether to vote or not.
What’s disturbing are the comments after the election: “I knew that would      happen and that’s why I didn’t vote;” “I’m glad I didn’t vote because it would have been a waste of my time;” “My vote wouldn’t have made any difference anyway;” etc.
What’s more disturbing is the fact that, in the next four years, we will have to put up with all the lamenting (mostly from those 57 per cent) about how this government is turning our Municipality into an undesirable place to live. I truly hope the next    government, for our sake, will surprise us in a good way. However, if the opposite proves true, I’m tempted to say we deserve it.
But instead, I’ll say I hope it teaches us the importance of voting. 15 minutes to vote can eliminate 4 years of pain.
