I wanted to share my thoughts on the recent events on Morrison Island where I attended the 400-year anniversary celebration of Champlain’s arrival in Canada. It was amazing with the two Algonquin Chiefs, Chief Gilbert Whiteduck and Chief Kerby Whiteduck, as well as the mayors: Dick Edwards, Sheenboro; Winston Sunstrum, L’Isle-aux-Allumettes; and Don Gagnon, Chichester.

We all took part in a tree planting ceremony to commemorate this event.
The drummers and native dancers were spectacular and invited the public to join in this activity. Local youth reenacted the Algonquians’ meeting with Samuel de Champlain in both English and French.Wonderfully done! Beautiful plaques were created through the help of many volunteers including the historic artwork of the talented Jelly Massee showing this history.
It was a beautiful, windy day, lots of sun and only a few drops of rain. My hat goes off to Gene O’Brien who organized the event that was well attended by the public.
