Ile-du-Grand-Calumet development
Local resident Serge Newberry presented a
project for developing
Ile Lafontaine in Ile-du-Grand-Calumet. The 1,100 acres of intramunicipal land is located across the river from Beachburg and has some of the best rapids in North America; many
rafting companies located on the Ontario side of the rapids use them. “The area has been on the MRC’s desk for development since 1999. According to the MRC, there hasn’t been any development because no projects have been submitted,” explained Newberry.
With an international rafting competition to be held this year, Newberry hopes to promote the Pontiac. “The area has great potential. Over 75,000 tourists will be attracted just for the rapids,” said Newberry. He hopes to use two acres of land to set up seven camp sites, an outdoor kitchen offering food, and a public bathroom, as well as provide transportation for rafters back to the top of the river. “Right now, when rafters reach the end of the rapids, they remove their rafts and kayaks and travel a lengthy distance by road back up to the top of the rapids,” explained Newberry, who said the transportation he would offer will be much shorter (about 2.5 kilometres) and take less time.
The mayors indicated their support of the project; after more information is received, the MRC Pontiac will make a final decision regarding support for the project and funding.
