intervenors in the CNSC relicensing hearing January 23-25 in Pembroke are not opposed to the Chalk River facility. We are in favour of strict regulatory oversight and the best quality, state-of-the art facilities that will keep radioactive waste out of our air and water, as recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
There are nuclear waste liabilities at the Chalk River site that have been estimated at $7.6 billion dollars. It is clear that there will be jobs at Chalk River for many generations, looking after these wastes and keeping them out of the biosphere. Chalk River could be a leader in responsible radioactive waste management, creating facilities we could be proud of and that would set an example for the rest of the world to follow.
