I appreciated your column “From the 148” last edition on our ignored good fortune to live next to one of the world’s most beneficial ecosystems, the Northern Boreal Forest. So nice to read some good news! However, Mr Ryan did not stress enough the immediate benefits we all get here in terms of clean air.

Most people, living in cities or in despoiled countrysides, breathe in a steady soup of nitrogen oxides and fine particulates – almost all of this from vehicles and fossil fuel use. The UN claims 7 million people die per year due only to atmospheric pollution – which we are more-or-less protected from by the Boreal Forest pouring out oxygen and filtered air upon us. Who wants to move to the city?
