SHAWVILLE – After over ten years of dedication, the Shawville Relay for Life organizing board will be retiring after completing their eleventh annual relay this coming June. The group is hoping to pass the torch to a new board who will continue to organize the event each year.
“We’ve been contacting past team captains to see if there is interest and we’ve had one person step up so far,” said board member Jaime Christie-Stewart, who noted that although the board has been discussing retiring for some time, they chose to wait to reach a major milestone first.
“We’re hoping to reach the $1 million mark for the amount of money we have raised over the past eleven years. It was one of our goals,” she added. About $100,000 needs to be raised this year to reach that goal.
According to Christie-Stewart, most of the board’s members have been involved for about ten years. “The event is a huge time commitment with the organizing taking about eight months of the year. We’re ready to wind down and dedicate some of our time to other projects we haven’t had time for in the past,” she explained, noting the board intends to continue doing work for the Canadian Cancer Society, but on a smaller scale.
Christie-Stewart, a board member since its creation, said she is very proud of what they and the community have accomplished over the last decade. “We reached our goals almost every year. I am very proud of how our community can pull together and what they can accomplish,” she concluded.
