We are writing in response to Katharine Fletcher’s informative column about
clear-cut forests in the April 6 Pontiac Journal. The clear-cutting in Thorne sounds shocking and irresponsible to those of us who worry about animals and birds losing their habitats.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a body promoting responsible forestry practices and we should all support its aim to manage forests as a sustainable resource. We would like to add our voices to those hoping to keep clear-cuts delayed or stopped at least until wildlife have a chance to reproduce and raise their young this spring.
Thanks also to Allyson Beauregard for investigating this problem further; it sounds like a complicated set of rules and guidelines are involved. The more we all know the better.
