Residents, cottagers, neighbours and
visitors to Thorne should be aware of the awkward situation that has arisen over the past two and a half years.
We, the people of Thorne, in the form of Thorne Municipal Council, have sued
us, the people of Thorne, in the form of the Thorne Community Recreation Association, claiming that the TCRA had illegally obtained, operated, maintained and improved the former school and grounds.
In order to comprehend this turn of events, you must use your most vivid
imagination. It’s as if all the hospitality, community involvement and fun generated by volunteers for the benefit of residents, cottagers and visitors for over 30 years has been a lie. In addition, Thorne Council has opted not to pay its fair share of the heating, lighting and maintenance costs for the building in which municipal offices are housed. That’s another $20,000+ that this hostile takeover bid has cost so far.
Council has spent nearly $69,000 on legal fees, most of which is undoubtedly to enact this anti-TCRA action. This is publicly available information, from past council minutes. What is mysterious and secretive, is why such a backhanded approach is
necessary, and who stands to benefit from the fiasco (aside from the lawyers). The pat answer in such cases is, “It’s before the courts – no comment.”
Of course, the TCRA had to hire a lawyer to counter the claim, so more money that could be used for community proposes will be going out through that door. As a
citizen of Thorne, I’m aghast that we (residents, cottagers and visitors) will be paying for this whole war games exercise. Thorne Council could stop it right now, by calling off the court case, and paying up for services received. Then we can begin discussing how the community can finance and build a proper fire hall.
