This is the anniversary of the 2015 federal election. During the last election, thousands voted to make sure the Conservatives didn’t win another false majority via our broken first-past-the-post voting system.
An overwhelming majority voted for change, and ten years of the Harper Conservatives was at an end. Since then, the Liberals have acted on many promises: the long-form census, an inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, and raising taxes on the super-wealthy.
Our broken voting system gave Prime Minister Trudeau 100% of the power with just 39% of the vote – almost the exact same vote share as Harper in 2011. Trudeau had promised that this would be the last election under thefirst-past-the-post voting
system, but is he going to follow through now that he had 100% of the power?
Now the Liberals are floating the idea of backing away from their promise to replace our broken first-past-the-post voting system for the next election.
PM Trudeau said in an interview that because Canadians like his government, they don’t think it’s important anymore, and that they may not even implement what the voting reform committee recommends.
This is a “trial balloon”, testing to see if people will hold them to their promise to “make every vote count.” We need to give the Liberals a powerful reminder that people voted for their promises – and breaking this promise could cost them support in the next election. We need to act fast while they’re listening for the reaction.
Can you send a quick message to PM Trudeau to tell him you think voting reform is important and you want him to keep his promise to make every vote count?
An all-party committee has been studying the issue, to make a recommendation before December 1st.
This is a test of whether the Liberals can back away from this promise – so we need to let the Liberals know that we want them to keep their word.
