As mentioned in his article, the Pontiac has a rich and decorated Indigenous history worth celebrating. In the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation, I am fully supportive of this initiative. It is important to keep our community members engaged and aware, especially as it relates to Indigenous culture. Additionally, such a project would contribute to increased tourism to the Pontiac with undoubted economic benefits to the area.
The proposed First Nation’s heritage center would also be a great opportunity to showcase and celebrate important elements of Indigenous culture including: artwork, traditional foods, and cultural events.
It’s important to teach our youth about the realities our history books often skip over. As settlers to this land, we need to foster a renewed relationship with our Indigenous population based on recognition of rights, respect and
cooperation.
This can’t be done without the support of our community and municipal leaders.
