MRC PONTIAC – From the smallest to the tallest, Ski at School (SAS) is helping students get active in winter by providing boots, skis and poles so they can experience cross-country skiing. Guided by its motto, “Play Outside, Grow Inside,” the program promotes physical activity and confidence through outdoor learning.

Now marking 10 years in the MRC Pontiac, Ski at School began as a pilot project in the 2016–17 school year before expanding into a full program the following season. Since then, it has grown across the Outaouais and continues to expand, with the goal of making cross-country skiing a catalyst for healthier lifestyles among youth across Quebec.

Schools can request visits from the program, and equipment can also be loaned on a seasonal basis. At Pontiac High School, for example, gear is provided for use by the Ski Club and Outdoor Education Program.

On Feb. 13, Ski at School visited École L’Envolée in Campbell’s Bay, working with four- and five-year-old students in the classes of teachers Elizabeth and Lyzanne. It marked the students’ second outing on skis this season.

SAS animator Katelyn Bertrand described the group as “amazing,” noting their persistence and willingness to get back up after falling. Teachers said it took only about 15 minutes to get the young students dressed and fitted with equipment. Both staff and students are hoping for one more ski session before the season ends.
