GARDENS, HISTORY AND QUILTS DRAW VISITORS TO QUYON TOUR

On August 9, the United Church Quyon Pastoral Charge hosted a self-guided fundraising tour celebrating beauty, history and creativity for the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada alongside Quyon’s 150th anniversary.

Visitors explored two country gardens, the historic Egan Mill and the Mohr House, plus a quilt show at Quyon United Church. Spiritwood, home of Eric and Katharine Fletcher, featured flower and vegetable gardens, a spring-fed pond, and a windmill-powered drip irrigation system.

At the Egan Mill, owners Isabelle Lajoie and Marc Bergeron showcased their stone-ground flour operation, a small museum, café, and ice cream truck, alongside a farmers’ market. The Mohr House, built in 1862, welcomed guests with stories from descendants Jan Vuori and Liz Wichman, who displayed antique trunks, furnishings and heirlooms.

In Shawville, the home of Elwyn Lang and Heather Barr drew gardeners with a lush property surrounding a 3,000-square-foot pond and expansive flower beds.

The tour ended back at the church with a quilt display, including one made for Quyon’s centennial, each block crafted and signed by a local woman. Downstairs, visitors enjoyed coffee and dessert. – Cheryl Dolan
