BRYSON – The Western Quebec Literacy Council in collaboration with Connexions hosted a mini seminar on cell phone tips and tricks at the Bryson Golden Age Hall on Monday January 19. Digital Literacy Co-ordinator for the WQLC, Alina Holmes guided the 14 attendees through a slide presentation covering a variety of tips and tricks to make cell phones less of a mystery.
Topics ranged from how to contact emergency services without opening the phone app to how to use a QR Code link using the phones camera. Holmes also explained how to access various apps on the respective app stores for both iPhone and Android platforms and emphasised being careful to stay away from outside source apps that could potentially contain malicious malware that can steal credit card information and also imbed spyware into phones putting other private information at risk. Researching whether the app had regular updates is one way to establish credibility, but a rule of thumb is that keeping ones private information confidential is always a smart move. Securing the phone with a password and Face or Touch ID to open the phone should be a given to ensure safety of personal information on the phone. The seminar was a part of the WQLC emphasis on providing digital literacy free to any local residents who need information.
