IVY HILL MARKS 39 YEARS WITH PRAYER AND SONG

The 39th annual Ivy Hill memorial service was held September 14 at the small church on Rochon Road in Waltham, drawing more than 25 congregants and friends. Pastor Corey Ferguson led scripture and music, preaching on “I Will Remember Your Name, O Lord.” The congregation prayed for those in need of healing, and attendees came from Waltham, Chapeau, Campbell’s Bay, Mansfield, Pembroke, and Ottawa. Free family Bibles were available at the entrance for visitors. Afterward, everyone gathered at the town hall for a potluck luncheon.

The church was built in 1890 by the Poupore family for the Black River trustees for $1. It opened as Black River Methodist Church in 1891 and, in 1928, came under the United Church of Canada, which still owns it. Ivy Hill Cemetery has served the community since 1847, though the church closed in the 1970s.

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of memorial services, set for Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 11 am, with a potluck afterward at the town hall. Rev. Sandra Hunt of Campbell’s Bay Free Methodist Church will be guest speaker. — Peter L. Smith
