CAMPBELL’S BAY – Jane Toller, warden of the MRC Pontiac, will soon purchase the Baie Inn, a significant heritage building in the region, located at 144 Front Street in Campbell’s Bay.’

Already active in the hospitality industry, Toller is well-acquainted with the field. She currently owns the Spruceholme Inn in Fort-Coulonge and the Gaultois Inn in Gaultois, Newfoundland. “I really enjoy this industry,” she said.

When she learned two weeks ago that the current owner, Mike Stanton, planned to close the inn, she quickly reached out to express her interest in buying the property. The two met soon after at the inn to discuss the opportunity and tour the premises.

Built in the 1930s, the Baie Inn has three floors and 26 rooms. The ground floor includes an event space, a bar, and slot machines. According to the owner, the machines belong to Loto-Québec and will need to be returned to the government.

The second and third floors contain rooms that have been closed to the public for more than 20 years. “They’re small rooms without private bathrooms,” Toller explained.
After seeing the building’s solid condition, she developed a plan to restore it as a functioning hotel. “I’ve had to make significant personal investments, but I believe it’s very important for the Pontiac to bring new life to this place,” she said. A meeting with a notary is expected soon.

Toller intends to preserve as much of the building’s original 1930s charm as possible. “It will be a place to stay, and I plan to build a dining room on the main floor where guests can have breakfast,” she said.

With several recent business closures on Campbell’s Bay’s main street, Toller said she’s excited about the project and believes it will help draw more visitors—and perhaps inspire other inns or hotels to set up in the area. “In the Pontiac, there’s currently a shortage of hotels, but we still have a wide variety of accommodations such as cabins, domes,
and motels,” she added.

Once renovations are complete, Toller plans to host an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the inn’s reopening.
