MRC PONTIAC – Two Pontiac athletes made their mark at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland from August 9-24, featuring more than 4,000 athletes from across the country competing in 17 sports. Hunter Beauregard of Campbell’s Bay and Cade Kuehl of Shawville played for Team Quebec’s men’s fastpitch softball and helped the squad win silver after losing 4–2 to Ontario in the gold medal game.
Kuehl, who is about to begin studies in Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa, described the week as one of the most memorable of his career so far. “Our walk-off win against Ontario in the round robin and the win against Nova Scotia to move onto the gold medal game are moments I’ll never forget,” he said. “Off the field, the closing ceremonies stuck out to me, with the walkout into a packed stadium to the concert performed by Alan Doyle.”
Wearing blue and white at a national tournament is a memory that will last. “It felt really cool to put on the jersey again and represent my province on such a huge level. I had so many local people reach out before, during and after the Games wishing good luck and congratulations. It made me realize how lucky I am to be from an area as supportive as the Pontiac.”
Kuehl also came away with lessons that went beyond the results on the scoreboard. “I learned the importance of camaraderie within the sport. This team is the tightest knit I’ve ever been a part of, and the results showed it’s an important part of our game.”
Asked which opponents posed the biggest challenge, he didn’t hesitate. “Ontario is the clear answer; every game against them was a battle. They were a very deep team with zero holes in their lineup. Nova Scotia was also a great team, with a gritty style of play. They were never easy to play against.”
Looking ahead, Kuehl already has his next target in sight. “The next goal I have is to win a national championship with Team Quebec. I’m extremely excited for next year and the challenges it brings,” he concluded.
