Lynne Cameron
Lynne Cameron, mayor of Portage-du-Fort, is seeking a fifth term in the upcoming municipal election. She says her decision to run again comes from her firsthand experience as mayor and her deep understanding of the municipality’s needs and systems. Cameron says she knows the level of commitment the job requires and is ready to continue dedicating the time and effort it demands.
“My door is, and always has been, open,” she said. “I’ve always believed that listening to residents and being accessible is one of the most important parts of this role.”
Cameron identified water infrastructure as one of the municipality’s biggest challenges. Last winter’s issues with the filtration plant affected both the system and residents, she said. The municipality quickly located and repaired two leaks and is now relining the pipes street by street with Canada–Quebec Gas Tax (TECQ) program funds. She said the work is progressing well and will improve the reliability of the system for years to come.
“Dependable cellphone and internet coverage is imperative now,” said Cameron, noting that connectivity is essential for economic development and for attracting and retaining families. “We have families moving from the city, some working from home, so this is a priority for them to stay. We also have new homes being built, which is wonderful for the community. And more community events—for adults and children!”
Cameron said essential services remain a focus. A waste management committee oversees recycling, garbage, and compost initiatives, helping prepare the municipality to meet future provincial regulations. “We amalgamated with the Shawville-Clarendon Fire Department to provide modern fire protection while saving ratepayers money. We’ve also installed one dry hydrant, with another planned.”
The other mayoral candidate, Kevin Murphy, did not respond to the Journal’s request for an interview by press time.
