Archeological surveys in Quyon

CAN YOU DIG IT?

“Yes we can” was the answer from a small group of volunteers and archaeologists
who conducted an exploratory survey in Quyon Community Park on June 7 and 8,
as part of the Friends of Chats Falls Archéo-Pontiac project.

The project has included public archaeological digs and school visits in the fall of 2023
and 2024, uncovering the foundations and artifacts of a trading post at Pointe à l’Indienne. This year’s survey in the park aimed to determine whether it would be worthwhile to hold additional public digs at the site.

Local historian Michael McBane, after an extensive search through materials at Library and Archives Canada, discovered that Philemon Wright—the founder of Hull—had established
a farm in the 1830s bordered by the Quyon and Ottawa rivers, where the park now stands. No traces of the farm were found during the exploratory survey, though more recent artifacts were uncovered. – Deborah Powell
