CAMPBELL’S BAY – A celebration of commitment to community service was held at the Campbell’s Bay RA Hall Saturday evening, May 18, as the Campbell’s Bay-Litchfield Fire Department put on their annual Firemen’s Ball. That commitment was evident an hour and half into the party when all but two of the firefighters in attendance were called out to a 911 call.
The partygoers (approximately 80 before the firefighters left) kept the party going and the dance floor full thanks to rocking tunes from local band, REWD. A large food tent outside, catered by Wayne and Susan’s Snack Wagon, provided poutine, fries and all sorts of burgers. Door prizes were supplied by many local businesses and there was a 50/50 draw with proceeds going to the fire department.
Fire Chief Kevin Kluke spoke to the media before the event about the mental strain experienced by firefighters as a result of witnessing traumatic events. Kluke expressed appreciation for the services provided by counsellors such as Justin Bertrand of Fort-Coulonge who brings his experience as a former priest to provide a listening ear to those who are struggling.
Among those celebrating their local fire department was retired founding member, Raymond Shea, who by his own account has “only missed one Firemen’s Ball since starting with the department”. Shea and his three brothers helped found the department in 1957 and many family members have followed in his footsteps.
Awards were given out later in the evening to celebrate service milestones. Stephanie Hebert-Potter and Tyler Shea both received 10-year awards, Geraldine Graveline was recognized for 20 years of service, Denis Dubeau for 30 years and Kenneth Legarde for 35 years. Chief Kluke was recognized for his outstanding contribution of 40 years with the department.
