MRC PONTIAC – Two young Pontiac ballplayers — Hunter Beauregard of Campbell’s Bay and Cade Kuehl of Shawville — are among the 15 athletes named to Team Quebec’s men’s fastpitch softball roster for the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Games, taking place from August 18 to 24, bring together Canada’s top athletes aged 20 and under in a national competition across multiple sports.

Beauregard, currently a student at Heritage College in Gatineau, spoke about the challenge of balancing sports and academics. “It’s always going to be really tough, but I try to surround myself with the best people who’re always there to help—especially my mom,” he said. “I wouldn’t be even close to where I am without her support,” he said, also creditting his coach Matt Greer.

Beauregard’s passion for softball is rooted in family tradition. He remembers watching his father play as a young child and has been playing the game for as long as he can remember. He began competing at a higher level four years ago and now plays third base, a position he gravitated toward because it’s the one his father played. “Third base is a high-action position, and I really enjoy the intensity it brings,” he said. “There’s definitely some sentimentality there too.”

Representing Quebec at the national level is something Beauregard takes great pride in. “My teammates and I have spent countless hours over the past three summers working towards one common goal: the Canada Games,” he said. He noted the importance of representation from smaller towns like the Pontiac. “A lot of the time, athletes from our communities get overlooked, so it will be nice to shed some light on our hometowns and hopefully make it easier for future athletes in the Pontiac.”

Kuehl is set to begin a Bachelor in Human Kinetics with Recreation and Sport Management at the University of Ottawa this fall. He has played softball since the age of five. “The first time I picked up a ball, it felt right.” Keuhl said. He primarily plays as a catcher but also sees time at third base.

Looking beyond the Games, he has sights set on eventually representing Canada.

Kuehl credits key figures who’ve supported his development, including coaches Matt Greer and Joran Graham, as well as his teammate Hunter Beauregard. “Their guidance and advice is always beneficial. Anytime I need extra practice, to work on something, or something just doesn’t feel right, they’re always there.” He also expressed appreciation for his parents, who’ve made countless long drives to games, tournaments, and practices over the years. “I wouldn’t be on this team if it weren’t for their commitment to helping me achieve my goals.”

Reflecting on how far he’s come, Kuehl imagines his younger self would be in disbelief.
“I love the sport and work hard at it. Getting to the level of the Canada Games is a big accomplishment. I’m going to keep working hard and we’ll see where it leads.”
