I’m writing to express my thoughts on the property evaluation situation in Alleyn-et-Cawood. As a longtime resident of the municipality, I have paid my taxes and upheld my responsibilities as a citizen. We voted in our municipal leaders (thank you for your tenacity in dealing with this situation), our warden and our provincial representatives. These leaders were given the power to be our voices and to fight for us – for our rights regionally and provincially. But what have they done?
What issues has our warden raised in question of this evaluation? Have our services improved? No. Have our interests or concerns been brought to Quebec City? No. A petition with over 2,000 signatures was given to Mr. Fortin, and after being presented at the National Assembly, it went no further. How absolutely disheartening for ratepayers.
Our warden and most mayors have not supported our request for a re-evaluation of the property evaluation process. As ratepayers, we expect more – much more – from our warden and mayors. Our municipal leaders seem to lack foresight. What will happen when they are faced with the same situation? Will they still expect our support? Will the warden recognize the error in her lack of support for Alleyn-et-Cawood?
Kudos to our task force for being our voice in the Pontiac and to our municipal council for fighting on our behalf. And thanks to our mayor, our director general and our municipal councillors for standing up for us!
I leave you with this thought as you head to the municipal polls this fall: think carefully about who you are voting for, because change needs to happen. And remember,
as taxpayers and voters, there is power in numbers.
M.D.
