Peter Gauthier’s column in the October 23 edition on why Canada’s first-past-the-post voting system must go is relevant given people’s disaffection with their elected representatives.
For example, if the Conservatives win the next general election, receiving 40% of the votes, this represents the support of only 25% of all Canadians. So, imagine a Poilievre government cutting social welfare, pensions, the dental plan, the pharmacare plan and the fight against climate change in the name of a conservative agenda. How many Canadians would be thrilled with that? We need better politics in Ottawa, other than ping ponging between the Liberals and Conservatives. It’s time to vote for change.
The only major party to support electoral reform is the New Democratic Party; the Liberals promised change 9 years ago and reneged; the Conservatives won’t hear of it.
