A great year for Shawville 4-H square dancers

Deborah Powell

Practice and dedication paid off for the more than 30 Shawville 4-H Club square dancers this year. “We’re very proud of how the members did. Many of our younger members are new to square dancing this year,” said Gillian MacDougall, Shawille 4-H volunteer.

The club participated in two competitions in April with three teams at each. At the Vankleek Hill Fiddle and Dance Association Competition on April 20,

the junior team placed third and the peewee team fourth in their age group. The senior team placed fifth in the open category. Amy Sheppard won Junior Caller and Coach Tyler McCann won Senior Caller.

April 27, Ormstown 4-H hosted their annual square dance competition, bringing in teams from Shawville, Lachute, Ormstown, Richmond and Prescott County. Eleven teams participated in either the peewee, junior or senior divisions. The Shawville peewee team placed first in their division. Elly Ingalls and Braylie Bullis won best peewee couple with Laurel Sally and James Stephens winning runner-up. On the junior team, Raelynn Sally and Eloise Thompson won runner-up for best junior couple. The senior team came in third with head couple Amy Sheppard and McKenna Richardson winning runner-up best senior couple. Eloise Thompson was awarded Champion Junior Caller.

Leading up to competitions, the 4-H dancers practised their steps on two occasions at the Pontiac Reception Center (CAP) for the enjoyment of residents. They also held demonstrations at the Coronation Hall Country Dance, May 18, and the Pontiac Agricultural Society’s Community Dance, June 1.
