According to James Sally that happened for the Flying Elbows Tournament a few years ago as another puck dropped on March 21 for the 14th edition of the Flying Elbows at the Shawville arena. The four-day event had a total of 26 teams in three divisions.

SHAWVILLE – You know you’ve made an impression when you get a mention by Rick Mercer on CBC television. According to James Sally that happened for the Flying Elbows Tournament a few years ago as another puck dropped on March 21 for the 14th edition of the Flying Elbows at the Shawville arena. The four-day event had a total of 26 teams in three divisions.
“I just love the tournament and want to make sure it keeps going,” said Shawn Henderson who is organizer for the second year in a row and eighth year as a player as he skates with the Chainsaws From Hell. “The tournament’s gotten to be a well-oiled machine.” Henderson estimates that there were 15 dedicate volunteers, from working the door to keeping the scores.
Players came from across the Pontiac, Renfrew, Ottawa, Arnprior, Montreal and Kingston. “It’s a chance to come back to the Pontiac and visit with everyone,” added Sally. There was a door prize of a BBQ, while every player had an opportunity to win prizes like a tool kit, fishing trip, hockey gear, etc. MVPs received beer mugs.
The tournament drew to a close Sunday night after 43 games. Winners were: Beer Gut Cup (Division C), Pontiac Thunder; Beaver Bowl (B), The Agency; and first-time winners of the James Smith Memorial Cup (A), Hursty’s Bar & Grill.
Two years ago, The Flyings Elbows name expanded into a four-team league that saw the Redneck Warriors as the winners this past season.
