I am writing in response to the closure of the Resolute Forest Products mill in Maniwaki and the uncertain future of the Commonwealth Plywood mill in Rapides-des-Joachims.

If we are to revive the forestry and lumber industry in the Pontiac, several steps need to
be taken. The MRC and mill owners should explore the possibility of producing finished products rather than just raw materials.

There are several manufacturing opportunities that could be developed in the Pontiac. Canada is facing a housing shortage and a high demand for housing materials. The
MRC should consider the following possibilities: manufacturing pre-fabricated or model homes, doors and windows, cabinets, flooring, and even firewood, which is currently
in high demand.

A comprehensive study is needed to assess these opportunities. With the right
planning, anything is possible.

On the tourism side, there is also
potential for growth. For example, a park similar to Parc Omega in Montebello could attract tens of thousands of visitors each year. Developing a similar attraction in the Pontiac could significantly boost local tourism.

Now is the time to consider what is best for the Pontiac, especially as we are in an
election year.

I hope these ideas contribute to the conversation about the future of our region.
