Reasons for empty houses

Empty foyer of newly constructed home

Bonnie James’ March 13 editorial “Lonely, little houses” was on point – really on point. I’ve had talks with locals about why those homes sit empty. There are reasons. A lot of it comes down to insurance and liability, or unwillingness, or inability to part out the piece of land the house sits on.

There’re reasons many have moved off the land and out of those homes. Insurance dictates a lot, as does land policies.

The guys who bought up the land wholesale don’t want people in those houses because it doesn’t benefit them.

It’s a cultural trend to not own land, not be rural, and not be family and locally based.

It should be turned around.
