The United Church Women’s Group (UCW) brought back a treasured annual tradition on Saturday, February 11: a traditional English afternoon tea. The popular Valentine’s celebration has been a longstanding annual event, where attendees, who this year wore red, gather at elegantly decorated tables to be served sandwiches with crusts cut off and delicate little desserts.
Guests arrived promptly, filling the church; the queue snaked all the way to the pews. There was excitement in the air, and not just from visitors; the volunteers in the kitchen were swept up in keeping pace with food and beverage preparations.
“This year’s event took place because we had some younger volunteers who were willing to take on the job,” explained one of the volunteers putting finishing touches on a tray of sandwiches. “Our organizers, Hailey Murray and Heather Dale, are new this year, and they’ve done a fantastic job.” “This is the first tea we’ve had since Covid,” said Murray. “It’s an important event, and it’s something the people in this community really look forward to every year.” (N.B.)
